In so many ways, street food is a core component of Thai culinary culture. It is a democratizing space where a myriad of tastes and smells can be found, and people from all walks of life come together to enjoy truly delicious and authentic Thai food. We’ve decided to spotlight some of the greatest staples of Thai street food – dishes that have delighted and inspired chefs and foodies around the world. Dive in to discover some of the most mouthwatering bites available on the streets of Thailand.
Guay Teow (noodle soup)
One of the most common Thai street foods, this soup is originally from China. It was brought to Thailand centuries ago and, over the years, it has been transformed into a unique Thai dish. It can be made using chicken, beef, or pork stock, and with any type of noodle common to Thai cuisine. Typical additions to the dish include veggies, meatballs, and wontons. Its savory flavorings are what give it that signature Thai taste: lime juice, dried chili peppers, sugar, and fish sauce.
Kai Jeow/Khai Jiao (Thai omelette)
This common dish has been transformed by Jay Fai, a street-side restaurant in Bangkok owned by Supinya Junsuta, whose famous omelette helped her to win a Michelin star. What makes this omelette so special? A Thai omelette is fluffy yet crispy, infused with a bit of lime juice and chilies, and often served over rice. It’s also one of the cheapest Thai street food.
Som Tam/Somtam
Som Tam is available pretty much anywhere and everywhere in Thailand. It’s a refreshing (yet spicy!) salad, and its main ingredients are shredded green papaya, shrimp, tomatoes, and carrots. It is typically flavored with dried chilies, garlic, fish sauce, and lime juice.
Kao Niew Mamuang /Khao Niao Mamuang(mango sticky rice)
This is a delicious yet simple dessert that is most often found in the most urban areas of Thailand. It is a phenomenal combination of ripe mango, coconut milk, and sticky rice. The rice is sweetened and drizzled with coconut milk or coconut cream, and the mango served on the side.
